BBB Dev Post 2 - In-Game Settings

Hey everyone!

We are getting ready to start Beta Testing BIG BANG BILLIARDS on Steam! So we felt it was time to start a Dev Blog for the game, so you all can follow our progress.

Let me start with a little history.

Background

The team at Octopus Interactive all came together during a VR/AR Hackathon in Seattle in April of 2017. We formed a 7 person team and our project was creating a 3D version of pool that you could play in VR. The concept was that the balls would float and you'd be able to shoot them in all different directions. So naturally, the idea of setting the game outer space and playing pool with the planets seemed like a great direction in which to head.

We spent a weekend at the Hackathon working day and night and came up with a pretty nifty base game demo that looked and sounded great, had easy fluid controls and actually made the player feel like they were playing pool with the planets.

We won an award at the Hackathon for Best Visual Design and most of the team decided that we wanted to pursue the project further, flesh it out and get it online for others to play.

Almost 7 months later, we have formed an LLC and are nearing our launch on Steam for the HTC Vive and we're proud of where the game is at. We started this dev blog a little late in the game, so for the first several posts I will demonstrate many of the features of the game that we have developed so far and then after that I will start tracking our progress as we move toward launch.

Video

This first video is a demonstration of the basic game. I'm not showing you the original Hackathon version. For those of you who might have played the original demo only a few things have changed in the base game:

New Features to the Base Game:
  • All new textures and animations on all of the planets.

  • Animated hands to help the player grab the cue ball and manipulate the environment. (Originally it was models of the vive controllers).

  • Gravity pockets with updated explosion animations. (Originally the balls would explode if they just touched a pocket. Now they move through the pockets and explode after).

  • Updated sound effects and music added to the game. (The sound effects are still being worked on and the demo video is missing some of them).
